Shammy Moo had a great time at a big boys rally – The Cambrian

Following the Neath Valley Stages in August we swapped the power sapping mud and shale for a proper multi venue stage rally –  the Cambrian Rally on 8th October. Based in Llandudno, there were 6 stages through the Penmachno, Clogaenog and Alwen forests followed by two passes through the stunning 2.94 mile Great Orme tarmac coast road which follows the headland facing theIrish Sea.  Being on a cliff face seemed less of an issue than the 3” high kerbs which meant the punishment for untidiness would have been severe (3 wheeled Chamois at the very least!).

Penmachno is said to have spectacular views but we didn’t notice!; Clocaenog (like the Great Orme a famous ‘Lombard RAC’ stage) was very fast with lots of technical bits and hairpins that had to be got right!

This was our third rally with the Chamois and we were fortunate enough to have Mike Dent – ‘Moose’ and Sam Thompson servicing for us. Mike built the Haydn Paddon Impreza which won the production class (Group N) WRC championship this year. Whilst Mike and Sam didn’t need to put a spanner on the car all weekend we did end up with significant negative camber on the OSF wheel following a severe bump left by a combination of Escorts and WRC’s digging ruts. Mike noticed it early in the event but after checking it was nothing serious kept it from the crew so we wouldn’t back off!

Out of about 120 starters we came 80th beating many serious rally cars with 3 times our power. We came 7th in the historic class (pre 68) swapping times with the Austin Healey 3000 of Graham Goodall (who has won the HRCR Historic Stage Rally Challenge) but Graham used his superior power to good effect on the Great Orme and ended up 40 seconds up on us over the whole event. We also began to get close to, and on some stages, take time out of some of the Minis (all 1300’s).

We’ve learned a lot about how to drive a competition Imp but even more about what we have done right and wrong about building a historic stage rally car. There is a list of developments planned to improve the car. It will all be pulled apart over the winter to check everything over and search out any potential problems and make some modifications. We plan to compete in the MSA British Historic Rally Championship next year. Frustrating times for Friesian Racing at the Scottish Borders Hillrally – Press Release

Witney based off road rally team Friesian Racing were thwarted early on in the recent Scottish Borders Hillrally.

“We’d set our hopes on a top 5 finish, despite the excellent entry! The event has been sold out since August and we were up against some of the best in the UK.” Said driver Henry Webster (Long Hanborough).

Not much more than a mile from the start of the event the crew were already in trouble. Stopping to help recover a stricken fellow competitor from the first water splash, Henry reversed into a rock picking up a puncture. Stopping to change the tyres cost the crew a considerable amount of time and any hopes of a fast start had long evaporated.

Instead the crew set about clawing their way up from the back of the field. From 35th the team wound their way back to 22nd at the overnight halt, following a string of top 5 stage times notably being 4th quickest on one of the two night stages.

“We used our experience on night navigational events to good effect in the dark.  Some people don’t like the night stages, but they hold no fear for us!” Said co-driver Joel Haylock (Kenilworth).

Friesian Racing and their distinctive cow coloured Land Rover Discovery, MuddyMoo were also back into their usual position of leading production car.

Day two dawned and with the team still back in the pack, overtaking was going to be the order of the day.  Catching a car in the first stage of the day the team struck a rock hard in one of the grueling off road quarry sections.

“We got past the car but had developed a vibration, it was quite bad a 50 mph, but cleared up again at about 75!” exclaimed Henry.

At the next service point all was revealed – a gaping hole in the transfer gearbox was diagnosed.

“That was it game over!” Said a disappointed Joel, “but we set another fast time in the second stage before we spotted the problem!  We did 12 flat out stage miles with no oil in the box. We were very lucky.”

The Borders was the first event in four years that the team have done without the support of Abingdon based Allmakes 4×4. “Its been great to have Allmakes support over the last few years, and I’d like to thank them for the backing they have given us.” said Henry.  Friesian Racing is seeking new sponsorship partners to join this dynamic team and growing sport for 2011. The Allmakes 4×4 (Didcot) supported Friesian Racing herd had high hopes for the final Hillrally event of the year, following on from a dominant class win on the Scottish Perthshire event, the Scottish Borders offering had terrain better suited to Muddy Moo the team’s V8 Land Rover Discovery.
“We carry a bit more weight than some of our rivals and have a bit less power, but in amongst the fast gravel tracks we are usually able to hold our head up!” Says driver and team principal Henry Webster (Long Hanborough).
A twentieth overall and 2nd in class fell short, though, of the team’s usual high level of success.
It was a particularly frustrating event for Henry and co-driver Joel Haylock – early on stage 1 the car developed an annoying misfire, which got progressively worse in the following stages, until the car ground to a complete halt in stage 3.
“It was a real pity,” recounts Joel, “even with the misfire we were ninth quickest and first in class in the opening stage!”
Fortunately the crew were able to re-join the rally after the service, using the ‘Super-rally’ rules which allowed the crew to continue in the event, albeit with a penalty.

After a clean run through the next loop of stages, the crew attacked Saturday’s final night stage, drawing on all their previous road rally experience to take advantage of the dark, unfortunately the misfire reappeared.
With high hopes that the electrical problems had been resolved, Sunday dawned bright, but with the Muddy Moo now running amongst the backmarkers, it was always going to be a steady progress as the team caught and passed slower competitors in the stages, a blowing exhaust manifold not helping progress.
Considering the problems that were endured by the team, they were happy with a 20th overall and 2nd in class.  “We had some really good competition in our group with the likes of Johnny Drysdale (Land Rover 110), Phil Bayliss (Land Rover Discovery) and Willie Stubbs (Land Rover 90), but sadly we weren’t able to challenge Johnny for the win this time.” Says Joel.

“The stages were fantastic, suiting me and the car down to the ground.  The organisation too was very smooth and a credit to the organisers, I can’t wait to be back next year.”  Says Henry.
“As ever Allmakes 4×4 have done us proud with the supply of some tremendous quality parts which have withstood a horrendous beating this weekend, if it wasn’t for our annoying electrical gremlins we would have been looking at a top ten finish which would have been a fantastic way to finish the year!”

2009 Scottish Borders Hillrally – Video

Another old one from the end of last year.  MuddyMoo and the guys feature at about 2’07”.  Not one of our best results, but some awesome stages a great atmosphere and one of the best entries for ages.  We finished second in class and 20th overall after suffering numerous misfires caused by a number of different things.  We did however redeem ourselves by scoring the 4th fastest time on the final stage and by memorably catching one of Drew Bowler’s Nemesis on a number of occasions!
